Jeff Johnson, The Detroit Toilet And Wordpress Vulnerability
I'm guessing a huge proportion of Wordpress users where hit by the recent wordpress problem, you can find out more about it here: Old Wordpress Versions Under Attack.
The post may say "old" but what it also means is all Wordpress versions apart from the very latest 2.8.4
Last weekend, I was hit by the above problem. I was running an "old" version of Wordpress, indeed it was a "souped up" version of Wordpress called Semiologic, specifically tailored for the internet marketing field.
This got me thinking about whether I should stick with Semiologic or try something different. So, a something a little different was the order of the day
I had heard of Jeff Johnson's free wordpress seo plugin before so thought I'd give it a spin.
It's relatively painless to setup but I do have one word of warning for you. When you install the SimpleCAPTCHA plugin as suggested, the automatic installation via your blog will put the SimpleCAPTCHA folder one level too deep.
You will need to make sure you just move the extracted folder up one level for everything to work (something you can do with your ftp program or via File Manager in your Cpanel.
I don't know if you've ever heard much of Jeff before but he's done a lot of work in the SEO field (keeping a relatively low profile) and is highly reputed.
Personally, I have met Jeff just the once - at a Stephen Pierce seminar in Detroit back in 2005, we had a quick chat about his involvement with John Reese and the original million dollar day Traffic Secrets but I distinctly remember saying "Nice to meet you Jeff, you'll forgive me if I don't shake your hand".
Well, what would you have done?
All the best,
Tom --
